If you’ve ever been interested in a career in social and community work, but don’t have the necessary qualification to study the subject at university, this Access to Higher Education Diploma could be the ideal course for you, preparing you for a future career in this sector.

You’ll study a range of units that cover Psychology, Social Work, Sociology and Criminology, focusing on developing skills that are relevant for a degree course, including reflection, critical analysis, academic essay writing and the ability to debate effectively.

Broadening your horizons, this course will challenge your view of the world. You’ll cover topics as diverse as safeguarding children, personality theory, race in British society and the theories of crime causation. Each topic is designed to help you succeed at university and in a working environment.

GCSEs at grade C/4 or above / Functional skills at Level 2 or above in both maths and English. You can study a GCSE alongside this diploma, if you do not have these grades in one subject or the other. As work experience in a care setting is required for a social work degree, you should have either a voluntary or paid position in place, before you start this course.

You’ll be continually assessed for this Access to Higher Education Diploma throughout the year, across each unit and each topic. Types of assignments include essays, reports, the creation of academic posters and leaflets, alongside some exams.
There are a number of funding and finance options to help you afford the tuition fees for this course and any other costs associated with studying at college. These include special grants and bursaries, as well as dedicated loans just for education.
