Overview

Courses at UCEN Manchester combine a variety of teaching and learning activities including seminars, lectures, tutorials, practical workshops and independent work individually as well as in groups.

In addition, these primary teaching and learning methods may be supplemented with field trips, work placements, guest lectures, presentations and group activities as applicable to each subject area.

UCEN campuses have libraries equipped with computers and printers for students which can be used in addition to the classrooms and course specific workspaces such as technology suites, workshops, laboratories and artistic/photographic studios.

As well as the software available to students on campus computers such as the Adobe suite, students are also able to use Microsoft Office remotely from their own laptops and access course materials using the Virtual Learning Environment.

The course leader is working towards a PHD in Educational and Professional Practice. They have previously completed a Masters of Business Administration, a BA Degree in Tourism and a PGCE in post compulsory education. They have worked and travelled worldwide.

Business Strategy (15 credits)
Build your awareness of the different kinds of strategy used in an operational, tactical or strategic role for an organisation, focusing on the theories, models and concepts which could significantly support an organisation’s strategic choice and direction.

Organisational Behaviour (15 credits)
Develop your understanding of the influence of culture, politics and power, on the behaviour of others in an organisational context, and apply the principles of organisational behaviour to a variety of business situations.

Year 1: Business IT Systems (15 credits)
Expand your understanding of contemporary business information technology (IT) systems and how organisations develop and continuously review their IT strategy in order to gain and maintain competitive advantage.

Year 1: Consumer Behaviour and Insight (15 credits)
Enhance your knowledge and understanding of the consumer’s decision-making processes, covering underpinning theories and frameworks – like needs recognition through research, the evaluation of alternatives, purchase and post-purchase evaluation - and relating them to real-world examples

Year 1: Developing Individuals, Teams and Organisations (15 credits)
Learn how developing knowledge and skills to achieve high performance is a cross organisation activity, understand how your own professional development is just one route to improving performance, and see how development needs are linked to learning interventions aimed at supporting an organisation’s strategy.

Year 1: Research Project (Pearson-set) (30 credits)
Choose your own project – based on a set theme and related to your specialist pathway – and explore a relevant and current topical aspect of business

Year 1: Sales Management (15 credits)
Explore the discipline of sales management for the 21st century, including the changing dynamics between buyers and sellers, driven by the fast-paced evolution of e-commerce, globalisation and customer driven culture
The objectives of the BTEC Higher Nationals in Business are as follows:

• To equip students with business skills, knowledge and the understanding necessary to achieve high performance in the global business environment.
• To provide education and training for a range of careers in business, including management, administration, human resources, marketing, entrepreneurship, accounting and finance.
• To provide insight and understanding into international business operations and the opportunities and challenges presented by a globalised market place.
• To equip students with knowledge and understanding of culturally diverse organisations, cross-cultural issues, diversity and values.
• To provide opportunities for students to enter or progress in employment in business, or progress to higher education qualifications such as an Honours degree in business or a related area.
• To provide opportunities for students to develop the skills, techniques and personal attributes essential for successful working lives.
• To provide opportunities for those students with a global outlook to aspire to international career pathways.
All of the books required for the course are available from the library. However, many students choose to buy some of the core textbooks for the course and/or a laptop. Students may also need to print their assignments and other documents.

Campus printing costs start from 5p per page.

Estimated costs are £300 for a laptop up to £100 each year for books and printing.

Events and trips that are on an ad-hoc basis will also incur charges that students need to be aware of.
