Student Life

What is the role of a student rep?

The role of a student rep is to both proactively seek and represent the views, questions and experiences of their academic peers to staff. Our student reps work in collaboration with UCEN Manchester staff to improve the academic experience for students. Each one is responsible for representing students in a specified course group.

It's important to us for you to have a voice and an input on every part of your experience at UCEN Manchester and our talented, passionate student reps are crucial to this.

Student reps are likely to cover a wide variety of issues on behalf of their course and fellow students, including: learning and teaching methods, research, assessment methods, support provided by personal tutors or supervisors, learning and research resources, facilities and academic events.

By publicising their role to students on their course and proactively seeking the views, questions, experiences and issues of their peers, they are the effective voice of students on their course.

They meet their Student Voice Coordinator once each term to receive support, as well as meeting department leaders and tutors at our regular student-staff committees. They’ll also be on our programme committees with our awarding partners, where they can formally raise any issues regarding courses.

As well as getting the satisfaction that their work and opinions are making a difference, our student reps also receive free training, a handbook, a certificate of achievement that’s useful for CVs and an exciting end-of-year celebration.
