First year Criminology and Criminal Justice students started their academic year by taking part in emergency response training and enjoying a political walking tour of Manchester.

Criminology students combined the old with the new during an exciting start to their academic year.

Students from the first year of the FDA and BA Criminology and Criminal Justice programmes were faced with a disaster zone when they took part in an emergency response training event at the Trafford Centre, part of their Professional and Academic Studies module.

The students arrived at 9.30am and were asked to act as injured persons in a training event for emergency services. They were sent to make up for mock injuries and then had the opportunity to meet with the event organisers and discuss the day.

Don Entwistle, who leads the Public Services and Social Justice programme, said: “The first year students worked on a mass casualty evacuation exercise organised by Ammonite training, who train security staff from major shopping centres on mass casualty evacuation procedure.

“Ammonite were very pleased with our students who learned about some of the major issues involved, including managing and controlling panic, and emergency first aid procedure.”

Students then took a step back in time as they enjoyed a political walking tour of Manchester. The group visited the Peoples History Museum and also sat the desk inside Chetham’s School of Music at where Fredrick Engels and Karl Marx wrote both the book ‘The Condition of the Working Class in England’ and elements of the Communist manifesto.

Don added: “The students had a through political education, which included a tour of the John Ryland library, a visit to the Lincoln Memorial, and a trip to Manchester’s former cotton and corn exchanges. It was a great start to their degree study.”
